Intro
I write a lot of non-peer-reviewed articles. As an academic, this may seem like a waste of time, but I do it for many reasons:
- I want my work to be accessible to more people. Accessible as in open access, but also accessible as in using more direct language that a non-specialist educated person can understand. Sometimes I publish in Al-Fanar because they will translate my English articles into Arabic, so I would reach both audiences.
- In the field of #EdTech, things happen and change very quickly. Waiting for the slow peer-review process of academic journals would make some of the ideas quite outdated by the time they’re published (and this has happened to me before)
- There are particular spaces that I’m fortunate to write for, which will reach a large number of people – such as Prof Hacker (where I am a regular blogger), DML Central (where I used to be a regular blogger) and Al-Fanar, where I have written a lot. Other spaces, I get invited to write for, and I usually accept.
To get a good flavor for the kinds of things I write about, check out this selection:
This was written during the COVID-19 global pandemic: Literacies Teachers Need During Covid-19 on Al-Fanar (so translated to Arabic).
This was a collaborative blogpost ahead of a workshop at #OER18 conference:
This one is a non-peer-reviewed piece in an academic journal, while I had ac column there in 2015:
Bali, M. (2015, September 3). The trouble with frameworks. Hybrid Pedagogy. Retrieved from: http://www.hybridpedagogy.com/columns/the-trouble-with-frameworks/
This was an invited post and got re-published several times:
Bali, M. (2017, January 31). There is More Than One Story To Be Told About Muslims in Trump’s America. The Conversation, republished 4 times, including Huffington Post
One of my earliest but still continues to be useful pieces written after Egypt’s second uprising this millennium in 2013:
Bali, M. (2013, August 19). Critical citizenship for critical times. Al-Fanar Media: News and Opinion about Higher Education. Retrieved from: http://www.al-fanar.org/2013/08/critical-citizenship-for-critical-times/ (republished in Open Democracy https://www.opendemocracy.net/arab-awakening/maha-bali/critical-citizenship-for-critical-times).
Here is the full(ish) list… it takes effort to keep updating these…
