You’re probably right, Mark! One of my academic regrets is that I gave up French and German at GCSE. I might never have been fluent, but at least I would have had a basic understanding (which I suppose I must have, come to that; I managed okay in Vienna at New Year). I gave up French and German to concentrate on Maths and Chemistry… which have served me no practical purpose whatsoever!
