One issue with respect to participation that I don’t see mentioned in this piece is that few online spaces are designed to facilitate different ways of participation. A simple acknowledgement that someone read something is a valuable bit of information but is not collected by many systems. In an online class environment, we could do more to facilitate short and long form comments and contributions.

One of the reasons that I’m planning to participate in the Connected Courses program is to explore how structure might impact active participation and ways to get wider active participation.
