Hi Betty, thanks for this! I also use “leave to cool off” rather than “beat”; learned about that possible interpretation in the Women in the Quran course, and it made sense in the context of the gradation of actions. However, what’s tricky is that in everyday language, for most ppl, unfortunately the meaning most ppl would attribute to it is “beat”, and God knew this would be ppl’s language, so why would he do that? I don’t know 🙁
