Have you read any John Holt? He was popular when I was at University. Initially he believed that you could change education from within – finally he decided that the power was too great – and he withdrew from formal education… If he is right and schools teach us how not to think – if they teach us the fear of failure – if they teach us that ‘education’ is about guessing the right answer that the teacher already knows – then I don’t think we do survive schooling without harm – we just don’t know how damaged we are!
