I’ve had this thought running through my head recently that there is a unique beauty to things when they’re just beginning… and I’ll just share the general thought here…
- Romantic relationships are always more exciting when they’re just beginning. I think it’s because when reality sets in, there are so many complex other things going on and they just take away from that excitement. That’s probably why people talk of “rekindling” relationships
- Project ideas (for me anyway) always spark a lot of adrenaline when they’re just beginning. In my old corporate job, there was an item they looked for in employees entitled “initiative and follow through” – and I’m sure I’m better at initiative than follow through. I usually get things done in the end, but I’m much more about the initiative part. That’s what’ll be good about delegating to other people 😉 hehe
- Meeting new people on social media and getting to know them – it’s really great if you get into intense conversations at the beginning of a relationship and it’s very exciting getting to know that person. It’s very different from relationships that evolve slowly over time (which can be great, too). Well, sometimes it’s someone you’ve known for a while on social media, but you get talking a bit more closely than usual and it feels like the beginning of “friendship”
- Finding a new author you love – it can get better if you find the author has written better stuff. But it’s often the case that I discover an author who’s now popular and its their last book that I read, or the most famous one. Sometimes they have better books, but not too often.
- Learning something totally new
- Teaching a new course (though I try to renew my courses every semester in my plans and implementation, so it’s never been boring for me)
- Moving to a new country – discovering how things work, where things are, I looooove that feeling. Or even the first day of a good vacation 🙂
- Every time your child does something new. And that’s one of the beautiful things about having kids. In the midst of all the parts that are difficult to live with, it’s every time your child does something new, like says a new word, behaves a certain way, performs a new skill – it’s one of the most beautiful things to witness and one of the biggest privileges of being a parent 🙂
I’ve always been energized by change and new beginnings. Of course, some things evolve into something better over time 🙂 Especially relationships and friendships, sometimes courses, often projects. But it’s a more mellow feeling, not the same adrenaline rush, right? It’s a different beauty…
Which reminds me of this quote I have loved since I was 17:
“If the rose at noon has lost the beauty it had at dawn, the beauty it had then was real. Nothing in the world is permanent, and we’re foolish when we ask anything to last, but surely we’re still more foolish not to take delight in it while we have it.”
In business there’s a term for people who are great at starting things but like the rose they fade. There’s something in in beginnings where everything needs to be figured out. Including creating procedures for others to follow while you’re out starting something else.
Yup. I am happy with that 🙂
