A good quick read is the annual NMC Horizon Report (http://www.nmc.org/publications/2014-horizon-report-higher-ed). I find they do a good job on helping to highlight trends to watch out for. It is good especially for people who are not interested in the nitty gritty of ed tech but want to know what the current trends are.
